Honor your needs~some thoughts on supporting your own meditation practice
Just this week I was asked twice for some of the things that “helped me meditate”,which led me to some interesting thoughts on this. I looked beyond the obvious, which to me were time and quiet. I actually realized that there were times in my life that brought me to break the rules so to speak(I have meditated in silence and in the midst of loudness, I have had bouts of setting aside regular sessions and then times where I had to fit it in 5 minutes). Which then made me see that one of the most important things has been to keep myself open.
‘’Follow the river and you’ll get to the sea.’’-French proverb
Try not to get to fixed in the techniques or style. What works for you today may not be what you need in a month. I have been loyal to several styles of meditation. After years of trying different ways to meditate I honor the gifts inherent in each.
~YOU CAN ALWAYS WALK AWAY~
‘’Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation. But better still is surrender of attachment to results, because there follows immediate peace.’’-Bhagavad-Gita
Often, feelings of perfectionism have you feeling like you are doing it wrong. There are times it is helpful to push yourself to stay on track. Then there are times it may be best to take a breather from it. You often will miss gifting yourself this meditation time, and when you go back you may be less rigid in your routine. This may help and if it does not perhaps you do need some extra motivation as listed below.
~TEA IN TEN~
“Whenever you are sincerely pleased you are nourished.’’-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Why not use the distractions around you to bring motivation? If you feel as if you are slow to settle for your meditation time yet your senses are aching( stomach growling, mind racing with conversation you know you need with your partner) let yourself know you can take that break to have the snack/make that call in ten minutes. Sometimes ten minutes is more than enough to renew yourself, and enough to meditate.
